A love story that blooms in innocence — and breaks the heart.

Step into the fragile, luminous world of Madama Butterfly, Giacomo Puccini’s haunting masterpiece of longing, devotion and sacrifice.

Set in Nagasaki, the opera follows young geisha Cio-Cio-San, who marries American naval officer Pinkerton, believing their love will last forever. When he abandons her, she waits faithfully for his return, sustained by hope and unwavering devotion. As illusion gives way to devastating truth, Puccini’s soaring melodies and tender lyricism heighten every emotion, building towards one of opera’s most unforgettable finales.

This new production reframes Madama Butterfly as a clash of two fantasies, inviting us to see a familiar tragedy through a bold contemporary lens. Acclaimed UK director Harry Fehr, who helmed Singapore Lyric Opera’s sold-out production of The Magic Flute last year, brings psychological clarity and emotional intensity to this interpretation.

Internationally celebrated soprano Nancy Yuen leads the cast with a deeply nuanced portrayal of Cio-Cio-San, joined by an outstanding ensemble and creative team from Australia, France, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Renowned for its evocative score, the opera features iconic arias including Un bel dì vedremo and the haunting Humming Chorus, woven with Japanese-inspired musical motifs.

More than a love story, this is a reflection on power, identity, and the illusions we hold onto — made strikingly relevant for audiences today.

This opera will be sung in Italian with English and Chinese surtitles, accompanied by the SLO Chorus and SLO Chamber Orchestra.
