Singapore Lyric Opera announces two international leading casts for Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida!

Singapore Lyric Opera (SLO) is proud to announce two international leading casts for Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida taking place 1 to 6 June 2018 at the Esplanade Theatre.

A timeless tale of star-crossed lovers, honour and betrayal directed by Australia-born Andrew Sinclair, Verdi’s Aida features two main casts of international singers, hailing from Singapore, Norway, Egypt, Spain, Mexico and Taiwan.

Sharing the title role of Aida will be Iman Moustafa from Egypt and Singaporean soprano Nancy Yuen. Iman was a top graduate from Cairo Conservatoire who has sung many major operatic roles in Europe and is currently the Artistic Director of Cairo Opera House. Nancy has sung Aida with Dublin Opera and Kentish Opera in the UK and is excited to reprise this demanding role. “Verdi wrote ‘pop’ music of his time as his tunes were all hauntingly mesmerizing and Aida was no exception,” says Nancy. “By presenting one of the world’s most popular operas, SLO hopes to reach out to audiences young and old, local and in the region.”

Tenors Thomas Ruud (Norway) and Israel Lozano (Spain) will share the role of Radamès, the Egyptian general entangled between Aida and the Egyptian king’s daughter, Amneris. Thomas Ruud is making his debut with SLO and his many operatic roles include Radamès in Verdi’s Aida, Don José in Bizet’s Carmen, the title role in Gounod’s Faust, Tamino in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and others. Israel Lozano, the star protégé of Placido Domingo studied with Alfredo Kraus and has sung roles including Rodolfo in La Boheme, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Alfredo in La Traviata, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, the Duca di Mantova in Rigoletto and many more in addition to many concerts around the world.

Sharing the role of the Egyptian princess, Amneris, will be Grace Echauri from Mexico and winner of multiple vocal competitions, Taiwanese Jopei Weng both of whom are making their debut with SLO. Jopei is deep-seated as an opera singer and concert soloist, whilst Grace divides her time as an opera singer, soloist and a conductor of choruses and orchestras.

Italy based Singaporean baritone Martin Ng returns to SLO to sing Aida’s father, Amonasro.

This production also features the Singapore Lyric Opera Chorus with orchestral accompaniment by the Singapore Lyric Opera Orchestra, under the baton of multi-talented Singapore based British born conductor Jason Lai.

With the melding of captivating music, beautiful sets, stylish costumes and atmospheric lighting, this timeless opera of Aida which has delighted audiences round the globe for almost 150 years, is set to be the most emotionally charged production of 2018!
