The Indonesian mezzo-soprano, Suminah Kusuma, was born in Jakarta, Indonesia. After attending secondary school and junior college in Singapore, she enrolled in the faculty of design and environment at the National University of Singapore and graduated with a degree in Real Estate. In childhood, her singing stood out. In the choirs, she had often been entrusted with solo parts. However, her real classical music exposure was first gathered in Reformed Oratorio Society, a vocal ensemble under the direction of conductor Rev. Billy Kristanto.
Since then, having had fallen head over heels in love with classical music, Suminah has sought to train her vocal instrument and improve her musicianship. She started learning singing with Alice Mui, later, with Natalia Kumkova, and has also received musicianship training from Tony Makarome and Hideaki Onishi.
Suminah has been performing as a soloist both before a large and a small audience. Early this year, she was the first prize winner at the ZhongSin Music Competition 2010, vocal group category. Opera in the Park on the 19th June 2010 marks her first engagement with the Singapore Lyric Opera.
