Described in the Oxford Times as the “star of the evening… a naturally gifted tenor with a gloriously rich and musical voice that instantly captivated and enthralled”, Singapore-born Melvin Tan graduated from the RAM (London) with the Ethel Bilsland prize.
Melvin was heard most recently as Edmondo and Don Ottavio in Singapore Lyric Opera’s 2012 productions. He has sung numerous times with the SLO, Flanders Opera Studio(Belgium), Northampton Festival Opera, Opera South (UK), Garsington Opera, Grange Park Opera, Clonter Opera, Guildford Opera, Opera Holland Park and at various festivals performing diverse roles such as Lionel, Nemorino, Belmonte, Pang, Camille, Cascada, Eisenstein, Dancaire, Andres /Cochenille /Pitichinaccio /Franz, Oronte, Nicias and Bill (Jonathan Dove’s Flight).
Melvin recently performed the role, written for him, of Curator Li in Mark Chan’s vocal tone poem The Flight of the Jade Bird at the New Vision Arts Festival 2012 (HK), which he also sang at the Singapore Arts Festival 2012(world premiere). With the SLO Orchestra, Melvin was the tenor soloist at ‘Opera in the Park’ from 2010-2012. He also performed as Soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 at the World Expo 2010 (Shanghai).
Forthcoming engagements include Opera in the Park 2013 and Britten’s Serenade with the Braddel Heights Symphony Orchestra.
