After achieving exemplary results in the National Music Competitions under the guidance of Ms Lim Tshui Ling, Lim Yan furthered his musical studies in Manchester, UK where he attended Chetham's School of Music from September 1993. There he was tutored by David Hartigan and later by Ronan O'Hora at the Royal Northern College of Music. In June 2001 Yan graduated from the University of Manchester; one year later he obtained his GRNCM and PPRNCM qualifications.
Whilst in the UK, Yan performed extensively throughout Britain and Europe. Most notable were his concert tours of Sweden and Serbia, where he performed Liszt's 2nd Piano Concerto with the Belgrade Radio Orchestra. He also gave the world premiere of Der Heimat zu by John Hails during his recital at the Cheltenham Festival.
Yan has also collaborated with the SSO on no less than three occasions,
performing works such as Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini,
Grieg's Piano Concerto and Beethoven's Choral Fantasy. Last year he was
involved in Les Noces at the Singapore Arts Festival and the International
Piano Festival. Future engagements include a premiere of a new work for
piano and orchestra by Mr Leong Yoon Pin.
