Hubert (Hugh) Francis studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and was a member of the Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, appearing in The Rape of Lucretia (Male Chorus), Tosca (Spoletta), Der Kaiser von Atlantis (Harlekin), La Fanciulla del West (Trin), Salome (Third Jew/cover Herod) and understudying Loge (Das Rheingold).
Other UK credits include Poisson (Adriana Lecouvreur), Chekalinsky (The Queen of Spades), Don Basilio (Le nozze di Figaro), Marquis des Grieux (The Gambler), Ivan in (The Nose), Poole (Burning Waters), and Drum Major (Wozzeck), a role he reprised in concert with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonia Orchestra in London and Paris.
He has also sung at the Janáček Theatre in Brno (The Greek Passion), Canadian Opera Company (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk), Bregenz Festival (Tosca, Playing Away, Karl V) and Teatro Massimo in Palermo (From the House of the Dead).
Recent concert engagements include performances of Elektra (Junge Diener), Fidelio (Florestan), Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and An die ferne Geliebte, Mahler's Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, Vaughan Williams' Songs of Travel, Finzi's A Young Man’s Exhortation, Dvořák’s The Gypsy Songs and the highly-acclaimed Nitro Project at the Royal Opera House.
He has most recently appeared in the role of Thibault (Les Vepres Siciliennes) at De Nederlands Opera and at Geneva Opera.
