Bernadette Cullen

Bernadette is one of Australia's foremost internationally recognised dramatic mezzo sopranos with a career spanning over 30 years in Australia, Europe and Asia. She has sung for the Vienna, Hamburg, Berlin and Munich Staatsoper, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Welsh National Opera, Opera Australia, West Australian Opera, Queensland Opera, in Prague, Palermo, France, Poland, Norway, Italy, Japan, and at the Hong Kong, Aldeburgh, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane Festivals. Her vast repertoire covers the great dramatic mezzo roles: Amneris (Aida), Venus (Tannhäuser), Brangane (Tristan und Isolde), Fricka (Das Rheingold and Die Walküre), Azucena (Il Trovatore), Dalila and Ulrica (A Masked Ball), Ortrud (Lohengrin), Herodias and Eboli (Don Carlos), Verdi’s Requiem, Mahler’s Symphony No.2, Das Lied von der Erde, Kindertotenlieder, Gurrelieder, Wesendonck Lieder, Les nuits d'été, Brahms’ Alto Rhapsody, The Dream of Gerontius.

She performed in a Gala concert with Dame Joan Sutherland and has worked with such conductors as Sir Charles Mackerras, Richard Bonynge, Simone Young, Edo de Waart, Oleg Cantani, Carlo Rizzi and Diego Masson. Recent performances include Mahler’s Symphony No.3 with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 with Vladimir Ashkenazy in Sydney and New Zealand. Her recordings include Verdi’s Requiem (Young), Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (Stenz) and Symphony No. 8 (Askenazy).
