Andrew Sinclair was born in Melbourne and has directed productions for all the major Australian opera companies. Following engagements with Welsh National Opera, English National Opera (then Sadler's Wells) and a London season of the Bolshoi Ballet, he was appointed Deputy Stage Manager for the Royal Opera, Covent Garden and is currently a Resident Director with the company.
Andrew’s work at Covent Garden includes staging revivals of Ariadne, Der Rosenkavalier, A Midsummer Marriage, Tosca, Peter Grimes, Elektra, Rigoletto, The Tales of Hoffmann and Katya Kabanova in addition to directing a semi-staged version of Wagner's Ring Cycle at the Royal Albert Hall.
Andrew Sinclair's first production for The Australian Opera was La Bohème in 1981, which was later filmed for video release and won an International Emmy Award in Los Angeles in 1989. Between 1983 and 1985 Andrew was Principal Resident Director of The Australian Opera where his productions included Otello, Das Rheingold and Die Walküre. Other Australian productions have included La Bohème, La Traviata, Adrianna Lecouvreur, Don Pasquale, The Consul, Madama Butterfly, The Marriage of Figaro, Aida, Lucia di Lammermoor, Peter Grimes, Lohengrin, Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci.
In 1989 he made his North American debut directing Nozze di Figaro for Seattle Opera. Andrew returns regularly to America where his productions have included Norma for San Francisco Opera, Lohengrin, Aida, Les Pecheurs de Perles with designs by British fashion icon Zandra Rhodes, Tosca, Maria Stuarda, Lucia di Lammermoor, La Traviata all for San Diego Opera, The Pearlfishers at Opera Theatre of Michigan, New York City Opera, San Francisco Opera, Opera de Montreal, Miami, Minnesota, Colorado and Washington Opera, La Bohème for Denver Opera, as well as Lohengrin at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires.
Other productions have included Il Trovatore, Lucia di Lammermoor and Tosca for Canterbury Opera, New Zealand, Peter Grimes for Wellington City Opera, and The Coronation of Poppea for the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts.
Previously Andrew has directed La Bohème, and Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliacci and Salome for Singapore Lyric Opera.
