Italian opera is known for its passion and lusciously beautiful music, and with Giuseppe Verdi, who succeeded Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini, this reached a zenith. He wrote roughly 30 operas, nearly half of them still in the standard repertoire of opera houses all over the world. His works remain a gold standard of characterization, stagecraft and musical beauty. Verdi’s chose operatic subjects that speak to us on a human level; love, envy, jealousy, loyalty, hatred, sacrifice and a host of other human emotions that touch us immediately. Coupled with his unerring sense of melodic invention, Verdi brought Italian opera to new heights, combining both musical and human drama into one entity. Right from his early works, he displayed this amazing propensity, and with age, he developed this skill, which resulted in works that are beloved all over the world today; which opera lover does not know the names Rigoletto, La Traviata or Aida? At the end of his life, when he had nothing else to prove, and to show that he was not merely pandering to popular taste, he completed his two greatest operatic masterpieces, Othello and Falstaff, both based on Shakespeare’s iconic plays, but both such contrasting works as well, displaying Verdi’s skills as a craftsman and not just a mere tunesmith.

While much of his fame rested on his music and his artistic excellence, many of his operas, with their political subtexts, became rallying points for the Italian Nationalists as well. More than just a composer, Verdi’s status was elevated to a political one, as he, by proxy of his stage works, became a figurehead for Italian independence. Such was his esteem in the eyes of the people that at his death, it is said that 200,000 people lined the streets to bid their final farewell.

This concert highlights and celebrates some of the most outstanding and popular works by this most beloved of composers, Giuseppe Verdi.
