Escorted by her brother Lescaut, Manon is on her way to a convent when she meets Des Grieux, a poor student. They fall in love and elope to escape Geronte, the wealthy French Treasurer-General, who plans to take Manon for himself. The love affair is short-lived, as Des Grieux is unable to satisfy Manon's appetite for luxury and she leaves him to become Geronte's mistress. In her gilded cage, she starts to yearn for Des Grieux, and when Lescaut brings them together again they resolve to elope once more. Unwilling to depart without some of Geronte’s treasures, Manon is caught red-handed when trying to leave with her former jewels. Arrested for immorality and theft, Manon is exiled to America and Des Grieux is desperate to rescue her. What will he do?

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF MANON LESCAUT, E. LOREN MEEKER

"L'Histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut", by Abbé Prévost, is one of the greatest love stories ever written. Puccini, one of the greatest composers of all time, interprets this story in his opera, Manon Lescaut. A great love story combined with a great composer makes for some really exciting drama! Manon and Des Grieux are extremely complicated people. Exploring the relationship of a femme fatale and her lover is a wonderfully fascinating process for the cast and artistic team.

I hope that the audience finds the story to be timeless and relevant. Opera is not a historical art form. The struggles these characters face are struggles we still go through today – virtue vs. vice, love vs. luxury. This opera explores a struggle that we all go through at some point in our lives.
